This tutorial approaches increasing watch time by looking at the Audience Retention graphs found in the Youtube Beta Studio admin pane. Scott explains that the graph in question is not the relative retention graph seen at the top of the page. That graph only applies to retention when applied to previous videos you have posted. This information is not helpful because Youtube bases rank on relative retention to competing videos using the same subject matter as yours. Scott explains that if you create an effective title and thumbnail and the user visits the video they are already sold on the videos topic. If you start your videos summarizing the subject matter of the video you may destroy what they want right off the bat. You may essentially chase them away because you sales pitch does not meet their need. Scott feels that this issue is overlooked all the time and it destroys youtube retention optimization.

Fledgling channels get sold on the thinking that we must pretend we are famous players by adding logo stings, and intros with music and graphics. This is a BIG MISTAKE. Small channels don’t have the draw like the whales have. Our integrity is generated by what we give not who we are. Small channels will grow with a value of content, not bells and whistles and bogus TV tactics. This youtube audience retention tip is powerful because it’s easy to change and it gets the audience to your main content faster. It’s best to work on channel branding but not in your videos.
